Many different names are used to describe adverse reactions to foods, including food hypersensitivity, food intolerance, food allergy and many other medical and non-medical terms. Food allergies were a rarity just 40 or 50 years ago, but today an estimated one out of every 13 children has a food allergy -- and the incidence is increasing. According to UK data, hospitalizations for food allergy increased by 500 percent from 1990 to 2006.
